The idea of harnessing the power of the Uhl River was conceived by Col. B.C. Batty, an English engineer, who saw the potential for a hydroelectric project in the region. With the support of Raja Joginder Sen, the project commenced in 1925, leading to the establishment of the Joginder Nagar Hydroelectric Plant, which was one of the first in northern India. The town grew around this power plant and has since been an important part of Himachal Pradesh's energy infrastructure.
Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,220 meters (4,000 feet) above sea level, Joginder Nagar is surrounded by majestic mountains and lush greenery.
